Fun Football Drills for KS2!

Looking for fun and engaging football drills to use with your KS2 students? You’ve come to the right place! These drills are designed to improve key skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork, all while keeping the kids active and entertained. Remember to prioritize safety and make sure everyone is having a good time!

Here are a few easy-to-implement and effective football drills perfect for KS2:

Dribbling Weave: Set up cones in a straight line, spaced about 2-3 meters apart. Have the children dribble the ball in and out of the cones, using small, controlled touches. Encourage them to use both feet. This drill improves dribbling technique, ball control, and agility. Start slow and gradually increase the speed as they become more comfortable.

Passing Square: Divide the children into groups of four and have them form a square, each standing at a corner. One child starts with the ball and passes it to the player on their right. That player then passes it to the next player on their right, and so on. Focus on accuracy and using the inside of the foot for a controlled pass. You can add variations like passing two-touch or adding a defender in the middle to intercept.

Shooting Practice: Place cones or markers to create a ‘goal’ area. Have the children take turns shooting at the goal from a designated spot. Start close to the goal and gradually move further back as their accuracy improves. Emphasize proper technique, such as keeping their eye on the ball and striking through the center. Safety is key here – ensure everyone is a safe distance from the shooter.

Red Light, Green Light Football: This is a fun twist on the classic game. The children dribble the ball around a designated area. When you shout “Green Light,” they dribble as fast as they can. When you shout “Red Light,” they must stop the ball immediately and keep their foot on it. This improves dribbling skills, listening skills, and reaction time. Add challenges like asking them to stop the ball using their weaker foot, or turn around before continue dribbling.

Team Passing Relay: Divide the children into teams and have them stand in lines. The first player in each line dribbles the ball to a designated point, passes it back to the next player in their line, and then goes to the end of the line. The team that finishes first wins. This drill promotes teamwork, dribbling, and passing skills. It is also good fun as it introduces an element of competitive spirit.

Remember to adapt these drills to suit the ability levels of your students. Start with the basics and gradually increase the complexity as they progress. Most importantly, make sure everyone is enjoying themselves and learning!
